What TNT Specifies in Commercial Finishes & Materials
We specify and coordinate commercial flooring, wall finishes, architectural surface materials, upholstery fabrics, glass treatments and wood and laminate surfaces.
01 / Paint & Wall Coverings
Paint & Wall Coverings for Commercial Spaces
TNT specifies paint sheen and wallcovering weight relative to how each surface will be used, not just what color it is.
Eggshell and satin sheens for commercial walls – wipe-clean, scrubbable, appropriate for surfaces that see regular contact or cleaning
Low-VOC and zero-VOC paint as standard for occupied commercial environments – relevant for LEED and WELL projects in Charlotte’s growing certification pipeline
Type I wallcovering (7–13 oz/linear yard) – lower-traffic areas: private offices, executive suites, accent walls
Type II wallcovering (13–20+ oz/linear yard) – high-traffic environments: corridors, reception, conference rooms, healthcare
Acoustic wallcovering (fabric-wrapped panels in the space’s color palette) where reverberation control and wall finish are both required
02 / Flooring & Carpet
Commercial flooring specification
TNT specifies flooring relative to the traffic environment, subfloor conditions and the acoustic and hygiene requirements of each zone.
Solution-dyed yarn: color intrinsic to the fiber – the most stain-resistant dye method available. It’s a standard on all high-traffic and food-adjacent installations
Face weight 20 oz/sq yd or higher for chair caster environments
Loop pile: holds appearance longer than cut pile under sustained foot traffic
Anti-static specification for server rooms and electronics environments – confirmed from manufacturer data
Spot-replaceable by tile – no full-zone reinstallation when a section is damaged
03 / Hard Surfaces & Stone
Hard Surfaces & Stone
TNT specifies hard surface materials with their performance data – PEI rating, grout type, sealing requirement, so the right material lands in the right environment.
Porcelain tile: Lighter-duty tile for offices and low-traffic areas. Tougher tile for lobbies, entries and high-traffic floors
Large-format tile: Bigger tiles with tighter grout lines, for a cleaner look in lobbies and reception areas
Grout: Non-porous epoxy grout for wet areas and kitchens. No sealing needed
Natural stone: Always sealed. Marble needs protection near food or coffee, since it can etch. Granite holds up better and resists stains. Slate works well for textured walls and floors in hospitality spaces
Engineered quartz: Stain-resistant and consistent-looking. A strong choice for reception desks, countertops and credenzas
04 / Glass & Partitioning Finishes
Glass & Partition Finishes
TNT confirms partition acoustic performance before specifying glass type. The acoustic brief drives the glass selection, not the other way around.
Sound control: Single-pane glass gives moderate privacy. Double-glazed glass (two panes with a gap) gives much better sound blocking. A poor seal around the glass can undo all of this, so we check seals carefully
Tempered glass: Our standard for partitions is the one that breaks safely into small, blunt pieces
Laminated glass: Used where extra safety matters, like floor-to-ceiling glass or near doors
Frosted glass: Adds privacy to conference rooms, offices and restrooms
Applied film: Adds pattern or branding to glass without replacing it
Switchable glass: Turns clear or frosted with a switch. Goes frosted automatically if the power goes out
Framing: Standard aluminum framing is cost-effective. Frameless glass gives a more open, premium look for reception and executive spaces
05 / Wood & Laminate Surfaces
Wood & Laminate Surfaces
TNT specifies wood and laminate surfaces by performance grade first – the correct material for the surface’s use – then by aesthetic.
Laminate for desks and counters: A tougher, scratch-resistant laminate for any surface people touch often, including desks, counters, credenzas
Laminate for cabinets and panels: A lighter laminate for vertical surfaces like cabinet doors and panels, where there’s less wear and tear
Budget laminate: Used on shelving and cabinets where cost matters more than durability, not for desks or countertops
Solid surface materials: Looks seamless, with barely visible joins. Scratches sand out easily. Great for desks, counters and feature walls
Wood veneer: Popular species include walnut, white oak, maple and cherry. Finishes range from natural lacquer to stain to a textured, wire-brushed look. We also confirm fire-safety requirements before anything is installed
06 / Fabric, Upholstery & Textile
Fabric, Upholstery & Textile
TNT specifies upholstery fabric by Wyzenbeek double-rub rating based on the traffic environment, before selecting color or pattern.
Light-use fabric. For seating that doesn’t get much daily use
Moderate-use fabric. For everyday seating used by one person
Heavy-duty fabric. Our standard for busy areas reception, lounges and any seat multiple people use throughout the day
Polyester and nylon. Durable, easy to clean and fade-resistant
Vinyl and faux leather. Easy to clean, ideal for clinical settings and heavy-use seating
Wool blends. A premium option with strong sound and warmth qualities, usually dry-clean only
Our Process
How TNT Specifies & Coordinates Commercial Finishes
Program Brief
We review performance requirements (acoustic, hygiene, traffic intensity, flame resistance, VOC limits) alongside the furniture specification. The finish scope is set to coordinate with the FF&E
Palette Development
Finish materials are selected relative to each other and to the furniture: flooring relative to upholstery, wall finish relative to millwork, glass treatment relative to partition layout
Performance Specification
Every material carries its performance data (Wyzenbeek rating, PEI rating, face weight, VOC limit, flame resistance class, STC for glass) to prevent on-site substitution
Procurement & Coordination
Finish materials are procured in coordination with furniture lead times. Flooring, wallcovering and millwork are sequenced so the environment is complete at move-in
Installation Oversight
TNT coordinates with flooring, painting, millwork and glazing contractors. All the transition details and edge conditions are confirmed in the field before furniture installation begins
Commissioning & Handover
Finish materials reviewed against specification at commissioning and maintenance protocols documented and handed to the facilities team
