What TNT Specifies for Storage & Filing
Here are storage and filing solutions TNT Commercial specifies for commercial spaces:
01 / Lateral & Vertical Filing Cabinets
Lateral & Vertical Filing Cabinets
Filing cabinets are where storage specifications get technical. The right choice depends on file volume, floor space and security needs. TNT confirms the letter versus legal requirement at the start, because mixing rail types within one filing program is a common client error.
Lateral cabinets: wider and lower, typically 30 to 42 inches wide and two to five drawers high. Files are stored side to side, which suits high-volume filing and the top can double as a credenza surface
Vertical cabinets: narrower (15 inches for letter, 18 inches for legal) and taller, for compact spaces where floor area is at a premium
Anti-tip interlock: allows only one drawer to open at a time. We specify it on all tall commercial filing cabinets because it reduces the risk of a loaded top drawer pulling the cabinet forward
File suspension: letter or legal rail sizing and hanging file frames or full-suspension drawers
Steel gauge: heavier-gauge steel (a lower gauge number means thicker metal) resists dents and holds drawer alignment longer
Locks: individual drawer locks, or single-point locking bars that lock every drawer at once. The latter is standard where security is required
02 / Under-Desk Storage
Pedestals & Under-Desk Storage
Pedestals are usually specified as part of the workstation program, so finish, height and configuration are set with the desk.
Mobile or fixed: mobile pedestals on casters, or fixed pedestals bolted under or beside the workstation
Drawer configurations: box/box/file (two supply drawers plus a file drawer), box/file, or file/file for filing-heavy roles
Dimensions: typically 15 inches wide. Under-desk pedestals run 24 to 27 inches high and desk-height units run 28 inches and double as a work surface. We match pedestal height to the workstation surface, since a pedestal that’s too tall creates an awkward shelf or blocks leg clearance
Activity-based working: where employees aren’t assigned desks, mobile pedestals become personal storage rolled to a new workstation each day, so lock quality matters more
Construction: steel is preferred. Welded units are more durable and knock-down (KD) units are more economical for large programs
Finish: usually matched to the workstation for a cohesive appearance
03 / Storage Walls
Storage Walls & Credenzas
Storage walls are floor-to-ceiling or partial-height modular shelving and cabinet systems that line a wall or define a zone. They provide high-density storage without taking floor space from the middle of the room. They can also define the edges of a lounge or collaboration zone.
Depths: 12 inches for shallow shelving, 18 inches for standard filing and storage and 24 inches for deep storage and equipment
Components: open shelves, hinged or sliding doors, file drawers, integrated lateral files, wardrobe sections and counter-height work surfaces
Credenzas: low storage units, typically 29 to 30 inches high, that combine closed storage with a surface for equipment, personal items, or informal meetings
Finishes: laminate, veneer, or painted steel, confirmed against the workstation program
Power: storage walls sometimes carry power for task lighting or device charging. TNT coordinates with the electrical contractor when it’s included
Clearance: we plan wall depth against available clearance and circulation paths. A storage wall that narrows the aisle behind a workstation below 36 inches can create accessibility and egress problems
04 / Open Shelving
Open Shelving & Bookcases
Open shelving gives accessible, visible storage for reference materials, binders, equipment and displays. It isn’t appropriate for confidential records unless doors are added.
Bookcases: typically 36 inches wide, 12 to 16 inches deep and 36 to 84 inches tall, with adjustable shelves (commonly every 1.25 inches)
Load ratings: commercial bookcases are typically rated 50 to 75 pounds per shelf. Archive and equipment storage needs a heavy-duty rating
Anti-tip anchoring: tall freestanding units are anchored to the wall in commercial installations and TNT includes this in every installation scope
ADA reach: in healthcare and government settings, accessible shelving must sit within reach range, no higher than 48 inches from the floor. We address this in the specification
Data protection: open shelving for active files containing personally identifiable information (PII) may need lockable cabinets added to meet HIPAA or other data protection requirements. TNT flags this when healthcare or legal clients specify open filing
05 / Personal Storage
Lockers & Personal Storage
Tier count decides what fits inside, so it’s a specification decision, not a default:
- 1-tier: full height, for coats, hanging garments and large bags
- 2-tier: a coat plus a shelf
- 4-tier: personal items and laptop bags
- 6-tier: small personal items only. A 6-tier is often specified where a 4-tier is needed, leaving compartments too small for a standard laptop bag, so we specify tier depth against what employees actually store
Materials: steel (welded or KD) is the commercial standard. Laminate is quieter and warmer, common in co-working and multifamily amenity spaces. Phenolic resists moisture for pool and gym settings
Benches: freestanding or wall-hung benches at the base of the locker bank, typically 12 to 14 inches deep
ADA: accessible lockers must be reachable within the 15 to 48 inch range and we plan accessible units into each bank
06 / Specialty Storage
Mailroom & Specialty Storage
Some storage needs go beyond standard office products. We have specified mailroom and records environments for corporate clients relocating to Charlotte, NC from markets where dense records storage is the norm. High-density mobile shelving can free enough floor space that some clients no longer need off-site records storage.
Mailroom furniture: sorting tables (typically 36 inches high for standing use), pigeonhole mail sorters organized by recipient or floor, parcel shelving and mobile mail carts
High-density mobile shelving (compactus): units on tracks that compress together when not in use, used in archives, law firm records rooms and medical records environments
Supply room shelving: heavy-duty, typically boltless steel shelving rated for office supply loads and easy to reconfigure
Secure records storage: lockable cabinets with documented access control for legal, law enforcement and compliance environments
Hazmat and battery storage: where a client’s requirements include lithium battery devices or chemicals, TNT flags it and coordinates with the relevant specialist
